Document Processing with AI — How It Works
A browser-only invoice-processing workstation. It extracts machine-readable PDF text with PDF.js and runs on-device OCR for supported images or image-only PDF pages using Tesseract—not a hosted generative AI service.
The business problem
Invoice details arriving in different PDF or image formats often require repeated manual reading, correction and export into spreadsheets.
What this demonstration actually does
- Read bundled Hillcrest HVAC and Willow & Pine PDF invoices and a Northstar Creative PNG OCR sample
- Accept supported PDF, PNG and JPEG files with signature and size checks
- Parse vendor, invoice number, dates, line items, totals and confidence/quality indicators where possible
- Flag review issues, permit field corrections and approval, then download JSON and CSV exports
- Reset the temporary document session and revoke preview object URLs
Who it's for
- Office staff processing service invoices
- Small accounting teams reviewing supplier bills
- Field-service managers preparing invoice data for review
How to run the demo
- Click Process this sample under Hillcrest HVAC. Observe text extraction and the populated invoice review fields.
- Inspect any warnings, edit an extracted field, and check whether the validation messages change.
- Approve the reviewed invoice, then use Export approved data for local CSV or JSON output.
- Repeat with Northstar Creative to exercise the on-device image OCR path.
- Try the file picker with an invalid extension to see rejection; click Reset full session to clear the workspace.
Sample walkthrough
Process Willow & Pine, verify the supplier and amounts against the PDF preview, correct a field if necessary, approve it and export structured data. The extracted values must be checked by a human.
What a business owner gains
A clearer review-and-export workflow with a visible human approval step, reducing dependence on hidden automation guesses.
How a customized production solution could work
A customer project might add authentication, controlled document storage, audited approvals, specialized extraction models or ERP/bookkeeping connectors. Any external transmission would require separate agreement and privacy controls; the demo has none.
Privacy, accuracy and reset behavior
Files are processed in the browser; OCR language data and PDF workers are served from this same site. The current session is in memory and clears on reset or reload. Do not upload confidential documents; extraction may be inaccurate, especially for low-quality scans.
Launch or return to the demo and use its reset control as described above.
Common questions and troubleshooting
Does my invoice go to OpenAI or another cloud processor?
No. PDF.js and Tesseract run locally in your browser; only static worker/model assets are fetched from this same origin.
Why is a total or invoice number missing?
Layout and OCR quality vary. Review the preview, edit fields and verify the validation issues.
Will files still be present after I refresh?
No. The processing session is in memory only.
Does every image PDF work?
Not necessarily. Unsupported, large, encrypted or low-quality inputs can fail; use a clear supported file.
